Tools Safely Stored

A to přece nikdo nechce.

Tool theft is on the rise. How can you protect yourself and avoid losing jobs?

So what happens if you lose your tools?

  • Loss of income while you arrange replacements, whether by renting or buying new tools.
  • Out-of-pocket expenses until the insurance covers the damage (if you are insured at all).
  • Project delays, which can create a domino effect on other jobs. And customers? They won’t be happy.
  • Finding quality replacement equipment can be difficult and often won’t match your original tools.

On top of that, you’ll need to report the theft to the police and, if insured, file a claim. However, many tradespeople avoid insurance – each claim can increase premiums, and sometimes the deductible nearly equals the cost of new tools. If you do have insurance, make sure to keep photos and serial numbers of your tools to simplify the process and help the police.

As the saying goes, prevention is better than dealing with the consequences. So what can you do to protect your tools?

How to protect your tools from theft?

Secure your van

Most thefts occur from work vans parked at home. That’s why many tradespeople invest in better vehicle security – GPS tracking, improved locks, alarms – all of which are popular today. However, vans remain an attractive target for thieves.

Signs like “No tools left in this vehicle” often don’t work. Thieves may still break a window just to check. And they know that after a long day, not everyone unloads their tools.

A simple tip? Park your van in a way that makes it difficult to access rear or side doors. Always choose well-lit areas.

If possible, park in a garage. Do you own expensive tools? Then be cautious of organized thieves who may monitor your van and potentially compromise your home security as well.

Make your tools harder to sell

Mark your tools with a UV pen using your postcode so they can be identified later. Take photos of your equipment so you can share them on social media if stolen. Ask colleagues and friends to monitor online marketplaces.

You can also visibly mark your tools – with paint or stickers – to make them less attractive to thieves. For added security, register serial numbers in a national database to increase the chances of recovery if your tools are found.

Store your tools securely

Even if you remove tools from your van, thieves may still attempt to break in – but at least you won’t face replacing expensive equipment.

You can store tools at home in a secure, locked cabinet or a portable toolbox that you can easily load into your vehicle. An even better option is to store tools outside your home and van – for example in a self-storage facility (self-storage).

Benefits of self-storage containers for tools

Our storage units are protected by CCTV monitoring. Only you have access to your unit. While you may still need insurance, your tools will be significantly safer. Many of our facilities offer easy van access, allowing you to park right at the unit, unload your tools, lock up, and head home.

We have storage locations across the country, often near main roads. You can rent a unit for just a few weeks, and for long-term use, we also offer discounts. Our facilities are open daily, so you can access your tools whenever needed.

Try calculating how much it would cost to replace all your tools – and then consider the peace of mind you gain knowing they are safe. If you think renting a storage unit could help protect your tools and your livelihood, get in touch with us. Our team will be happy to provide all the information you need and help you choose the right unit size.
