The good news is that you can make an effective cover yourself<\/strong>, without the need to buy expensive accessories.<\/p>\n

1. Why a lock cover makes sense<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

A protective cover:<\/p>\n

\u2022 limits water from entering the cylinder,
\n\u2022 protects against freezing in winter,
\n\u2022 reduces the buildup of dust and dirt,
\n\u2022 extends the lifespan of the lock and key.<\/p>\n

For containers where water often runs directly down the doors, a cover is one of the most effective security accessories<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

2. Option No. 1 \u2013 Cover made from a cut PET bottle (most common solution)<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nA simple, cheap, and surprisingly effective solution.<\/p>\n

Procedure:<\/strong>
\n\u2022 take a PET bottle (0.5\u20131.5 L depending on the lock size),
\n\u2022 cut off the bottom part,
\n\u2022 create an opening in the neck for the shackle,
\n\u2022 place it over the lock so the neck points downward.<\/p>\n

Advantages:<\/strong>
\n\u2022 zero cost,
\n\u2022 good protection against rain and snow,
\n\u2022 easy replacement.<\/p>\n

Disadvantages:
\n\u2022 lower resistance to UV radiation (becomes brittle over time),
\n\u2022 visually more of a temporary solution.<\/p>\n

Tip: Use a darker or thicker PET bottle for longer durability.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

3. Option No. 2 \u2013 Rubber cover (e.g. from an inner tube or rubber glove)<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

Rubber repels water very well and holds its shape.<\/p>\n

Options:<\/strong>
\n\u2022 piece of an old bicycle inner tube,
\n\u2022 thick rubber glove,
\n\u2022 rubber sleeve.<\/p>\n

Procedure:<\/strong>
\n\u2022 cut an opening for the shackle,
\n\u2022 pull it over the top of the lock,
\n\u2022 optionally secure with a zip tie.<\/p>\n

Advantages:<\/strong>
\n\u2022 excellent water protection,
\n\u2022 good resistance in freezing conditions,
\n\u2022 discreet solution.<\/p>\n

Disadvantages:<\/strong>
\n\u2022 harder to remove when opening frequently.<\/p>\n

4. Option No. 3 \u2013 Plastic box or electrical enclosure cover<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

For those who want a more solid and \u201cclean\u201d solution.<\/p>\n

Disadvantages:<\/strong>
\n\u2022 more work to produce,

5. Option No. 4 \u2013 Combination of cover and proper lock orientation<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

It\u2019s not just about the cover, but also how the lock is positioned<\/strong>:
\n\u2022 the keyhole should face downwards<\/strong>,
\n\u2022 the cover should overlap the cylinder from above,
\n\u2022 the lock should not be in contact with the ground or standing water.<\/p>\n

Proper orientation often extends the lock\u2019s lifespan more than lubrication alone.<\/p>\n

6. Don\u2019t forget maintenance even with a cover<\/h3>\n

Even the best cover cannot replace:
\n\u2022 regular lubrication (3\u20134\u00d7 per year),
\n\u2022 checking operation during each visit,
